Urban Boxing League’s origins can be traced back to the grassroots movement to stop gun violence in the neighborhood around the time of the pandemic.
The mission was to put an end to the surging street violence in Tampa, by offering boxing as a more constructive outlet for the aggression. And as a means of building camaraderie through combat sports.
In a short time, the Tampa street boxing scene exploded with popularity.
Numerous combatants stepped inside of parking cones, wooden fence posts, and various other makeshift boxing rings around the Tampa Bay Area.
They fought for glory, respect, recognition, and the entertainment of lively and raucous crowds.
Unfortunately, all of these events were uninsured, unsanctioned, and illegal.
And many developed the reputation for being chaotic and dangerous, for both the fighters and fans.
A good deal of the organizers had no experience with boxing previously.
And some were proponents of the lifestyle and criminality that the movement originally stood against.
Needless to say, it seemed like it was time for a hard stop to the whole thing.
The problem is, the gun violence didn’t go away.
In fact, it increased again after the halt of the boxing events.
Urban Boxing League‘s events are family-friendly, 100% legal, and fully sanctioned with the State Athletic Commission.
So we took our time, got organized, and did things the right way.
UBL competitions offer the fighters and fans a little more flavor and excitement than the monotonous red jersey vs blue jersey style of average amateur boxing competitions.
The mission is still the same: Knocking out gun violence in the community.
But now, because Urban Boxing League matches are officially sanctioned, they count toward each fighter’s required five amateur bouts before they can declare themselves professional.
That means not only does the Urban Boxing League offer a controlled outlet for more headstrong members of the community, it also serves as a platform for young boxers to market themselves and build their brand before entering the professional ranks.
